CAÑON POTATO HISTORY

Pride in our product and a high level of service to our customers and our growers has always been the cornerstone of our company and we would like to thank our loyal customers for making our success possible.

Cañon Potato Company began shipping fresh potatoes in 1947 through the Tonso family's fresh vegetable operation, Cañon Vegetable Growers, located in Cañon City, Colorado. Using a fleet of company owned trucks during the winter Jim and Joe Tonso hauled potatoes from the San Luis Valley to its customers. In 1952 the operation moved into its first potato packing facility located in the heart of the San Luis Valley in Center, Colorado.

For the next seven years the company worked on establishing a relationship with some of the finest growers in the area and on developing a reputation for quality and service. Through hard work and commitment the business outgrew its early facility, and in 1959 built a new packaging plant in Center, which included storage for approximately 200,000 sacks of potatoes. With modernized packaging equipment and storage capabilities this new facility allowed the business to develop and grow along with its growers. Over the years there were multiple additions and improvements made to the packing facility and additional storage was built.

Our current facility includes storage for 650,000 cwt. of fresh potatoes and a modern equipment line that was largely upgraded in 2006 to improve efficiency and our ability to ship the highest quality packs.

For over fifty years and two generations, Cañon Potato Company has taken pride in the product it places on the fresh market and in the relationships it has developed with its customers and its growers. We look forward to being part of the ever-changing produce industry for years to come.
