ABOUT CANON POTATO

Our potatoes are grown in the San Luis Valley, a high altitude, alpine valley located in southcentral Colorado. The fertile earth of the valley floor where our potatoes are grown is 7,600 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, with peaks rising up to over 14,000 feet. At this altitude, the summer sun's radiant energy is intense and gives our plants a high altitude vigor. Here the summer nights are cool and the atmosphere arid. This unique growing environment provides our potatoes natural protection from many plant diseases and insects, which find the winters too harsh and the summers too dry.

Local farmers began growing potatoes in the San Luis Valley in the late 19th century, making it one of the oldest potato growing areas in the country. Today, center-pivot irrigation systems, improved potato varieties, and the expert care of our growers ensure a bountiful harvest of premium quality potatoes. Russet potatoes grown for fresh market uses account for the majority of potatoes grown in the Valley. But you will also find an excellent selection of red and yellow skin varieties, as well as other specialty types.
